One of the most useful and most annoying uses of JavaScript setting the focus to particular form element on page load.

If you’re not quite clear on what I’m talking about, go Google. See how your cursor shows up in the text box automatically? That’s JavaScript, not your browser being helpful.

Pretty nice, right? Well, did you notice the lag? Your cursor wasn’t there the instant the page loaded, especially if it’s the first time you’ve visited Google in a while (i.e. you don’t have the page and its scripts cached).
