Kottke posted a great video of Michael Jackson performing at the 1995 MTV Music Video Awards, and he put it better than I can:
It’s not a groundbreaking performance or anything — it’s like a greatest hits package — but I had it taped on VHS and watched it many many times, wondering how a person could move like that.
I remember listening to Thriller over and over on my record player when I was 4 and 5 years old, and I’m trying to remember him before all of the crazy shit that came later.
I don’t have much affection for him now, but I do have a sense that he gave me a lot of joy as a kid, so I’ll say, Rest In Peace, Mr. Jackson.
